Smartlyte Ltd
Smartlyte Ltd, based in Birmingham, are specialist providers of services including training and translation to strengthen effective communication.
Through their current work with St John Ambulance they have recognised that many people from ethnic communities are not accessing first aid training particularly because of an inadequate grasp of English.
To help St John Ambulance overcome these barriers and meet with cultural and linguistic needs, Smartlyte translated the course materials and brought in trainers to deliver the courses in different community languages observing cultural and sensitive needs.
Hafsha Shaikh, Managing Director of Smartlyte said:
"Many people, particularly women, in ethnic communities who speak little or no English are reluctant to attend training. First Aid saves lives and is a vital skill in family homes – equipping learners to deal with incidents.
"One such example enabled a mother to stem the bleeding and call for an ambulance after her son trapped his finger in a door and severed it from his hand. Thankfully the boy is expected to gain full use of his hand but had the mother not been able to understand the course and its materials, the outcome may not have been so positive."
Hafsha, a professional multi-lingual trainer went on to explain the importance of learning community languages:
"Thinking creatively outside the box can bring many benefits to customers and businesses alike."
