The University of Birmingham has an excellent reputation for language teaching, whether you are an undergraduate looking to study a language as a subsidiary subject or a business person looking to develop basic skills to support your business, the University of Birmingham has a language course to suit you.
The Centre for Modern Languages offers a wide range of European and non-European languages for students, staff, the general public and businesses (through BIBC).
Evening courses are open to members of the public and are available in ten languages. The courses offer the following:
- Two-hour classes once a week
- Access to the latest digital language learning facilities in the University’s Language and Media Resource Centre
- Weekly tasks between classes, to help consolidate the work done and prepare for the week ahead
- Assignments to help students and tutors chart progress
- A statement of credit at the end of the course
BIBC offers language training and cultural awareness training for business people who need to develop their language skills for professional purposes. Tailor-made language training for individuals or small groups is available in a wide range of languages. Training can take place at the University or in-company. A programme of Business Language Courses is also available with beginner level group courses in German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. French is offered at intermediate level. These courses have start dates in March and June 2006.
The Centre for European Languages and Cultures (CELC) offers a range of undergraduate courses including single and joint honours option and a year abroad as part of the programme. The Centre encompasses the departments of French Studies, German Studies, Hispanic Studies and Italian Studies. Undergraduate teaching is research-led, reflecting the variety of intellectual, cultural and historical research interests of the CELC staff.
