61 languages taught in complementary schools 22.09.05
A new study has found that ethnic minority communities make provision for teaching 61 different languages across the UK.
The study also showed that mainstream primary and secondary schools offer at least 35 languages, taught either as part of the curriculum or on an after-school basis.
The research suggests that the linguistic map of Britain is changing, with multilingualism spreading beyond typically multi-ethnic areas. This is enhanced by the number of students gaining community languages qualification, which this year hit nearly 40,000.
The report seeks to stimulate further debate about the value of community languages, especially since many providers fail to consider these skills as valuable for students future careers.
