The company will be working with Walsall's Shire Oak school as part of the Business Language Champions Programme, which is designed to bridge the gap between school and the workplace. The programme is coordinated by the RLN West Midlands and funded by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). The 'Champions' bring the importance of language skills alive by demonstrating how they are used within their workplace as well as conducting site visits and work placements.
Tim, who recently conducted a talk with Year 9 pupils, calls on other companies to highlight the benefits of speaking a foreign language:
"Our work is exclusively international and we place great emphasis on speaking to our customers in their own language, employing fluent speakers on the operations desks. As a local employer, we would like to nurture language talent to increase young people’s employability in the competitive international jobs market."
Chris Everall, RLN Manager added:
"Bosses like Tim are a powerful advocate of language learning and place it in a relevant and inspiring context. We would encourage other businesses in the region to take on an equally pro-active role."
Business Language Champions is a programme funded by the Department for Education and Skills. It is co-ordinated by the Regional Language Network West Midlands with the support of CILT, The National Centre for Languages and Comenius West Midlands.
