Year 9 students at Aston Manor School in Birmingham, boosted their future employability when they took part in a languages workshop in conjunction with Birmingham International Airport.

The workshop was designed to show students the importance of languages in the workplace and how such skills are used within the tourism industry to attract overseas visitors.

Mandy Haque, Airport Manager at Birmingham International Airport, returned to the school after a successful language assembly in January, to set students the task of creating posters to advertise Birmingham to international visitors.

This event took place as part of our Business Language Champions (BLC) programme, which aims to bring the world of work into the classroom to raise the profile of languages and encourage more students to continue studying languages.

The winning group of students designed a poster promoting Birmingham to French visitors and earned themselves a trip to the airport to see the new control centre later this year.

Mandy Haque was really pleased with students’ enthusiasm, she said:

I was very impressed with the student’s ability and flair for not only the French language, but promoting their city.”

BLC project manager, Frances Pallett, added:

Mandy is a fantastic Business Language Champion and was able to bring the glamour and excitement of global travel into the classroom. The students worked really hard and I hope they are all proud of their work, which will now be displayed in the airport for ‘real’ visitors to read.”
