New language at their fingertips 04 June 2008
Staff at Burton College tried their hands at sign language as part of Adult Learners Week.
The session at the Lichfield Street campus covered finger-spelling, signing names, and asking basic questions in British Sign Language.
Melanie Kemp, curriculum area leader for skills for life and work, said Adult Learners Week was important because it highlighted some of the opportunities for learning available in post-compulsory education.
She added: "British Sign Language is an enjoyable language to learn, and a very useful form of communication. It can be learnt for use in noisy environments, for improved communication with deaf friends, or to develop a rewarding career."
Burton College offers courses in British Sign Language Level 1. For more information call Sarah Sedgley on 01283 494 481 or visit www.burton-college.ac.uk
