Tamworth students learn the value of their language lessons - 01 February 2008
Students at Queen Elizabeth’s Mercian School in Tamworth learnt the true value of their language lessons recently when they were visited by the manager of a local company.
Mark Hall, export sales manager of both Siak Transfers, a Stoke-on-Trent based manufacturer of decorative transfers for the glass and ceramic industry and Roy Kirkham & Co Ltd, a manufacturer of English Bone China products visited the school on 24 January to talk with students about the importance of continuing with their language studies.

Students listened to talks about Mark’s background, how languages have helped his career and amusing anecdotes from his various travels, before creating their own emails and advertising slogans in French.
This project is part of the Business Language Champions programme, co-ordinated by the RLN and designed to increase take up of foreign languages in schools.
The talks were well received and enjoyed by all, as Amy Hawthorn, head of languages, said:
“Our students really enjoyed the workshop and were very interested to hear how languages are used in the workplace. It is important for students to recognise that languages are more than just a school subject and that they are used everyday in real life work situations.”
Mark was delighted with the response from students:
“I was delighted to be able to pass on my experiences in both my personal and business life thanks to use of languages and maybe influence the talented students to choose languages as an option at such an important crossroads in their young careers.”
